Apple Pie with Cheese Crust
This recipe comes from the book “Recipe Book for Enjoying Canadian Apples” published by the Department of Agriculture in the 1950’s
Ingredients
5 to 10 (depending on size) cooking apples. We recommened Northern Spy, Cortland or Empire.
1/2 cup grated cheese
Butter
Sugar (2 tablespoons per apple)
Cinnamon or nutmeg
Pie shell pastry, either store bought or homemade.
Directions
Line pie plate with pastry.
Cover with layer of thinly sliced apples.
Allowing 2 tablespoons of sugar to each apple, sprinkle sugar, mixed with a little cinnamon or nutmeg over layer of apples.
Dot with butter.
Repeat until pie plate is well filled.
Roll 1/2 cup grated cheese into pastry for upper crust.
Cover apples with the cheese crust.
Bake in a hot oven (425 F.) for 15 minutes. Reduce heat to 350 F. and bake for 20 to 30 minutes longer, or until apples are tender.
